Pam, originally from Derby, moved to Stapenhill 35 years ago with her late husband Derrick (Pastor of High Street Evangelical Church). Mother of 3, Pam had plenty of practice looking after children growing up as the oldest sibling in a family that she describes ‘had dysfunctional parents’
At the age of 13 Pam became a Christian after taking herself off to a Sunday School (she had heard that they were giving away sweets.) So, with cardboard covering the holes in her shoes and potatoe peelings keeping her hunger at bay, Pam continued to attend the Sunday school. She didn't feel she had much in common with the old folks there, she was very 'rough' around the edges, and in her own words, was 'quite a handful' but she continued to go along and listened to what was being said, gradually she began to feel that someone was finally parenting her, as she came to know the ‘father heart of God’
But life at home continued to be tough with an alcoholic dad and mother who liked to be ‘out on the town.’ Pam knew that despite the desire to run away from it all, God had called her to stay and care for the family. Many years later, she was to see the reward of sticking around as both her mum & dad became Christians themselves.
